It is hard to find any family in Nigeria or any part of the world where instant noodles are not eaten on daily basis. Noodles since its introduction by our Chinese brothers far back as 1995 has taken over the delicacies we have for breakfast lunch and supper. Every lunch box in nursery to secondary school contains one brand of instant noodles or the other. The adults are not left out as we can find instant noodle joints at every corner. I will say this instant noodle consumption is becoming a trend in the world. My worries are: these noodles are they good for human health, the slogans of some brands echoes better nutrition is that true? Well here are my thoughts
The calories noodles contain:
I looked up the nutritional information on the label of two popular brands of instant noodles Indomie and Tummy Tummy. A serving of 200g gives 430kcal and 462kcal of energy respectively. I will be honest here one pack can’t satisfy me so I go for 2-3 packs for each meal. Three packs gives 3×462=1386kcal.This whooping figure is for the noodles alone when I add other things like oil, meat, fish and a bottle of coke to quench my thirst mehn this is a whole lot of calories. My friends Festus and Israel consume up to 4 packs.

How healthy is the caloric value in noodles?
It is recommended for men to consume 2500kcal/day while women 2000kcal/day. This recommendation varies with age, sex and lifestyle. My common sense tell me already that the 3 packs of noodles I consume for breakfast and lunch has yield much more than the recommended calories. This is just for breakfast alone when I have lunch cos I am not going to eat noodles all day hell no!! Then the calories will be running 6 figures. This is to say that any day I live a sedentary lifestyle meaning I don’t exercise to burn off the excess I will be adding some weight. The fact here is the calorie is too much.
The sodium noodles contain:
The nutritional label shows that per serving of 200g of Indomie gives 1700mg of sodium also known as salt. Assuming I consumed 2 packs today check the figures out. 2×1700=3400mg
How healthy is the sodium in noodles?
Nutrition society of United States of America recommends 1500mg of sodium a day at most.1700mg of sodium per serving is way too much for a serving. This can put one at risk of congestive heart failure or high blood pressure. The funny part is that the human body needs just 500mg of sodium a day to function well and the rest is removed through sweat or retained in the body to cause havoc. For me the value is much more than required
The saturated fats noodles contain:
Nutritional label on one of the brands states that 200 grams of a pack will give 8 grams of saturated fat. Multiply this figure by number of packs you consume, the result is shocking.
How healthy is saturated fat noodles contain?
Here a serving provides 8 grams of saturated fats. Least’s I forget a gram of fat gives off 9kcal of energy.
How healthy is the saturated fat in noodles?
National health services UK recommends 20 grams of saturated fat per day for girls and 30 gram for men. Three packs of noodles give me 24 grams already without my fried eggs. Imagine when I add my fried eggs I will surely exceed 30 grams recommended for me. For me the 8 grams preserving is not so big but the fact that one pack of noodles cannot satisfy my hunger makes I healthy for me.
The nutrition label on the noodle also shows nutrients such as Vitamin A, VitaminB6 Niacin calcium etc all of which I term good and beneficial when consumed.
The question still remains are instant noodles good or bad for human consumption? Those are my thoughts why not share yours using the comment box
